Meeting Updates

Thursday, December 10, Thursday, December 17, & Monday, December 21

Meetings Fourteen, Fifteen, and Sixteen

Everybody has been doing great but there is a few things that must be said:

  1. The meetings start at 2:40p.m. and although there may be a 2-3 minute period after 2:40 that the student officers and advisors use to set up and finalize what needs to be said at the meeting, being late is truly unacceptable. All people that plan to be late must notify either a student officer or an advisor; otherwise, lateness is not acceptable.
  2. We realize that there is no ending time for the meetings but if you plan on leaving, be sure that you have met with the student officers you are responsible too and did everything you needed to at the meeting. Usually, the student officer or an advisor will then tell you that you can leave. Please do not abuse the fact that we don't have an ending time by leaving without telling anybody or doing anything.
  3. The Monday meetings are meetings too so make sure that you attend them as well. Just because they are on a different day of the week does not excuse you. They have been on the website since November 16th so they are well known and continually spoken about at the meetings. Remember, attendance is mandatory.
  4. Be sure to read the 12/21 Update on the Welcome page for very important info about what to do over break.

Besides that, have a great vacation and see you all on January 7th!

Meetings Eleven, Twelve, and Thirteen

Everything seems to be moving along smoothly and we are definitely going to be ready to go for the competition. The builders have all of their materials, the protein modelers have their kits, the powders and chemicals needed for the chemistry events are set up and ready for usage, the miscellaneous events like Picture This are turning into small full club practice sessions for everyone both in and out of the event to share ideas, and the physics and earth science testing events are definitely ones that we are going to ace come competition day.

All there is to say is: Roslyn will not only be ready for the competition, Roslyn is going to SWEEP. We have every event down to a science. . . literally, and there isn't anything we shouldn't be ready for. All we have to do is PRACTICE, PRACTICE, PRACTICE.

Great work everyone. Keep it up. Just TWO MONTHS until February 6th, 2010!!!

See you next week on Thursday, December 10, 2009.

Meetings Eight, Nine, and Ten

Meetings Eight and Nine had a very low attendance that we weren't so pleased with, but Meeting Ten on the 12th was very good. It was very productive and things seem to be moving along. There isn't much to report besides the fact that building materials will be in soon and everybody should be working on their study events, if they have any. Just make sure you are ready to go with everything else. Just watch out, our first Monday meeting is coming up soon! Have a good week and see you next time!

Meeting Seven

This was a solid meeting where we definitely got a lot accomplished. Some key points from this meeting were:

  1. Teams are going to be posted successively, first a team of the most dedicated and hard working members, followed by the next most hard working, then the 3rd most, and finally the alternates. The first team will be posted within three weeks.
  2. Building people met up and created a joint list of all of the materials they decided they needed. Blueprints are due next week. This is required!
  3. Some tests were given out to test how much people are learning the material they need to for their events. (i.e. Chem events)
  4. T-shirt designs are only being accepted for two more meetings so if you are interested, get on that!
  5. Marching band people know that if they cannot attend next week's meeting because of Syracuse, they must submit materials on either Monday, Tuesday, or Wednesday. They do NOT have the week off. Sam and Scott are both planning to be at the meeting even though they are both in marching band. Being there shows your dedication and shows that you want to be on a good team!
  6. CHECK THE WEBSITE! CHECK THE WEBSITE! CHECK THE WEBSITE! I CANNOT STRESS THIS ENOUGH! YOU ALL MUST MUST MUST MUST MUST CHECK THE WEBSITE!
  7. CHECK THE WEBSITE!!!

See you all next week on Thursday, October 29, 2009.

Meetings Five & Six

These were a very productive two meetings and since similar things happened at each meeting, they are both going to be summarized in these next few bullets. We still got some new members and our dedication and efficacy seems to be at a high. This year looks to be our best one in a long time. You guys are the best!

Some things that happened were:

  • We finished accepting complaints at meetings and everything is being left as is. If you have a complaint, email us using the "Contact Us" Section to the right.
  • We also all split up by events and all of the people doing events went to the appropriate student officer designated in the "Event Responsibility" section above.
  • All builders were supposed to have given in their desired materials lists into either Scott or Mr. Marvin. This is crucial so the building can get going as fast as possible.
  • In order to reduce t-shirt price (buying a t-shirt will be mandatory this year), we might be having some bake sales. If you want a reduced price, be prepared to participate and not just blow it off.
  • It appears that we might be able to accommodate a third team, but as of now there are only two registered. What does this mean? Compete and work hard so you can represent Roslyn at the regionals competition.
  • If you need any event sheets, you must talk to Kate about getting them. If you talk to someone else, there is no guarantee you will get them.
  • Some events require the purchasing of a field guide (i.e. Ornithology, etc.). If you are in one of these events, either plan to buy a guide yourself, or talk to an Executive Board member immediately about acquiring one some other way.
  • It has been confirmed that building events will be built during these meetings so all builders, you have been notified, be prepared to stay late at meetings. If Mr. Marvin, Scott, Gabe, and the other Student Officers and Advisors can stay late to help you, utilize them and stay late too. Also, staying late shows your dedication to the club and the team overall.
  • The last week for t-shirt designs to be accepted is our first meeting in November, so if you are interested in making on, make it soon.
  • Finally, Olivia wrote our first Extracurricular Newsletter! Go check it out on the "Newsletter" section of the site. Its meant to get people pumped about Science Olympiad and show our name in as many places as we can!

See you all next meeting on Thursday, October 22! Hope you all had a great week!

Meeting Four

Great work again everybody. Coming out with the events and partners is always a very hard week for the members of both the Executive Board and the club, but you guys made it a breeze. I can already tell: This year is OUR year!!!

Some things that happened at this meeting were:

  1. We went over the necessity of checking the website. Updates are becoming more frequent so you MUST check here often.
  2. We found out that five events were eliminated from the regional competition. Those events have been taken off the website so if you requested one of them and did not get it, that is why.
  3. We gave out the event assignments and partners for each event. Each set of partners for every event is competing for a spot on either the A or the B team. All other members will become alternates. This is your incentive to work hard and make it to the A team!
  4. We also took any complaints about event assignments and are working our best in trying to accommodate everyone. Remember, not every can be accommodated but we are doing our best to try to make as many people happy as possible.
  5. Also, the last key point is that if you want to be in Science Olympiads, but were not assigned any events: TALK TO ONE OF THE EXECUTIVE BOARD MEMBERS (or click and send a message using the Contact Us page of the website) IMMEDIATELY! It is crucial that everyone that wants to be involved has the opportunity to get involved.

See you all next week at our meeting on Thursday, October 8! Have a good week!

Meeting Three

We had another productive meeting this week; good work everybody! Our main goal of the meeting was to zero in on who would compete or begin preparing for each event. Some things that occurred at the meeting were:

  • The Executive Board Members presented the events they are running [Details] and selected prospective team members for each event.
  • The Executive Board will anounce which events each member is responsible for in a near future meeting.

Our Next Meeting Will Be Held On October 1, 2009.

Our Second Meeting

Our second meeting was also fantastic and very productive! We again had a great showing and everybody that showed up last week showed up again. This year's attendance is looking to have a great start. The elections were also a huge success and, with our new associate officers, Roslyn Science Olympiad is clearly on the road to victory!

Some things that happened during the meeting were:

  1. The five candidates for the Associate Officer position who were chosen based on their platforms all gave speeches about why they should be elected by the members of the club.
  2. The club voted for their two favorite of the five, and we had two clear winners: Olivia Conetta, senior, and Gabe Ruttner, junior. Congratulations!
  3. We also went over the various parts of this website and how everyone should constantly check and start navigating around www.roslynscioly.com
  4. Finally, we said that next week we are going to have event assignments set up and there are going to be event sheets available for everyone to look at.

See you all next week, September 24, 2009!

Our First Meeting

Our first meeting was a great success! We had a huge showing of students, great interest in events, and an overall productive club meeting. Everyone seems thoroughly excited about this upcoming year.

Some points we hit during the meeting were:

  1. -Competition date: February 6, 2010 - This is mandatory so make sure you are available.

  2. -Attendance policy: Each club member must attend at least 80% of the meetings. If you are going to miss a meeting, you must notify an advisor, student officer, or officer associate.

  3. -Seniors: Seniors must also follow all rules of the club, and cannot leave the club just because they are accepted into college.

  4. -Associate Officer Position: Two spots have been created for an associate officer position. In this position, the associate will be shadowing and assisting the student officers as well as organizing and compiling information for the club. If you are interested in this position, you must submit a platform, by either giving it to a student officer or sending it to Lhpglad@aol.com, saying why you deserve this position by Tuesday, September 15, 2009 at midnight. You must have been in this club last year if you are going to apply for this position.

Those were generally the events of the meeting.

See you next week on September 17, 2009.
